Siem Reap Authorities Instruct Woman to Cease Inappropriate Religious Practices

Siem Reap: Local authorities in Siem Reap have ordered a woman to stop performing religious activities deemed inappropriate and disrespectful to Cambodia’s cultural and historical heritage.

On February 2, 2025, the Siem Reap Provincial Buddhist Monks Committee, alongside a multi-disciplinary team, met with En Charya to address concerns over her public religious practices and online activities. Officials instructed her to halt actions that misrepresented religious traditions and could mislead the public.

Authorities specifically ordered En Charya to stop performing religious rituals in public spaces and refrain from sharing such activities on social media. She was also instructed to delete all previously posted photos and videos, as well as to inform her friends and followers to remove any shared content.

Another major concern raised was her claim to be a spiritual figure known as “Princess Indra Devi,” whom she encouraged people to worship. Officials directed her to immediately cease these claims and refrain from engaging in any religious activities at temples.

Additionally, En Charya was advised to use appropriate language when discussing religious matters and to acknowledge the truth about her actions. As part of the resolution, she was required to record a public apology video and commit to not repeating these behaviors.

Following the meeting, En Charya agreed to fully comply with all five conditions set by the authorities.
